French & French Immersion

kids doing an activityIn the Core French classes in our English only schools, teachers help students improve their speaking skills and develop a broad basic understanding of the French language.

Our French Immersion Program develops and refines students' ability to communicate in French and expand their knowledge of the language through the study of francophone texts. French Immersion programs support non-French speaking families, as well as French first language families. All communication between school and home is in English.

Learning French (Core French)kids in classroom

French is taught at each of our elementary and secondary schools. While many school boards choose to begin French as a Second Language instruction at the grade 4 level, we are blessed with having French taught beginning in Grade 1, by a qualified French teacher, all the way through to Grade 12. Students in Grades 1 and 2 receive 20 minutes per day when they learn French, and in Grades 3 to 8, they have 40 minutes each day of French instruction.

At the high school level, our secondary students are encouraged to complete a course in French each year, from grade 9 to 12 in order to receive a French certificate. Students must complete at least one French course. Our Catholic secondary schools offer French at both the academic and applied levels. From grades 1-12, students will have many opportunities to engage in cultural experiences (e.g. Carnival, French performers, field trips and exchanges) and participate in and prepare our students for real-life situations.

Learning in French (French Immersion)

London and Middlesex: French Immersion programs are offered at Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School and its elementary feeder schools, St. Anthony Catholic French Immersion and St. John Catholic French Immersion.

Woodstock and Oxford County: French Immersion is offered at St. Mary's High School and its elementary feeder school, Holy Family Catholic French Immersion.

St. Thomas and Elgin County: French Immersion is offered at St. Anne's Catholic Elementary School.

At French Immersion elementary schools, parents may register their child(ren) in Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten or Grade One. Entry after Grade One tends to be more challenging for children, unless they come from another French Immersion or French First Language school, and consultation with the Principal needs to occur. teacher reading to kids

To register in French Immersion at the secondary school level, students are required to have 3800 hours of French language instruction prior to registration.

At our elementary Catholic French Immersion schools in London, all subjects except Religion and English are taught in French. This means that about 75% of the day is spent learning in French for our students. In the London District Catholic School Board, our French Immersion program begins in Junior Kindergarten.

In our secondary schools offering the French Immersion program, a variety of French Immersion courses are offered to students at both the academic and applied levels. Students are encouraged to take Géographie, Histoire, Français, Religion among others, where a minimum of 10 credits are required to receive their French Immersion certificate for secondary school. Math and science courses are offered in English.
