Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) allows students the opportunity to experience an apprenticeship trade or occupation while they are still in secondary school. This gives the student the ability to make an informed decision about a potential career in the skilled trades. According to the Ministry of Labour, Training & Skills Development (MLTSD), "participants of OYAP are students who are in a cooperative education placement in an apprenticeship trade or occupation" (OYAP Program Guidelines). To be eligible for the OYAP program, students must:

  • Must be at least 16 years old;
  • Have successfully completed 16 credits towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) prior to starting the program; and
  • Must be a full-time or part-time student in one of our secondary schools.

OYAP enables employers/sponsors to work with students, providing an opportunity to assess the student's aptitude, attitude, and interest. If both the student and employer/sponsor are willing to further the commitment, the student can be registered with MLTSD as an apprentice and continue apprenticeship training upon receiving her/his Ontario Secondary School Diploma. OYAP provides students with the opportunity to earn secondary school credits, gain valuable experience and, if registered, continue post-secondary apprenticeship training.
