Jean Vanier an EcoSchool: We work towards the vision that all students and staff in Ontario schools will be engaged in environmental education and practices, developing the knowledge, skills, perspectives, and actions needed to be environmentally responsible citizens.
Reforest London Project at Jean Vanier
Jean Vanier successful applied for and received a grant for over $5000.00 from the Million Tree Challenge sponsored by Reforest London and by these generous donors;
Ontario Trillium Foundation
Arcangelo Rea Family Foundation
This money was used to plant 9 large shade producing trees and 27 bushes to buffer the trees while they adjusting to our intermediate and FDK playgrounds. The intermediate students participated in a 30 minute workshop that taught them about local species of trees that are found in London. After discussing the pros and cons of various types of trees, the intermediate students chose the trees they planted on their playgrounds in May. In addition, students from FDK to grade 6 have participated in a 30 minute workshop on six types of trees that are found in London and how to plant seedlings. Our students planted 330 various types of seedlings and are now caring for them in their classrooms. Students will nurture the seedlings until May when the seedlings are ready to be planted at home or in their neighbourhood.
Reforest London has three strategic goals. Empowerment: Empower community groups, businesses, and individuals to plant and care for trees. Ecosystem Health: Improve London’s environmental health through planting trees and shrubs in natural areas, parks, yards and along streets. Education: Educate Londoners about the importance of trees and how to plant and care for them. If you have any questions about the seedlings, please ask your child to fill you in on what is going on in their classroom.
