Two Minute Mindfulness: Mountain Rising

The founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally in the service of self-understanding and wisdom.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

In today’s Wellness Wednesday post is a two-minute mindfulness activity that will help you remain in the present and activate your body, brain and spirit.

Try this:

  1. Stand straight with your feet apart, knees slightly bent, arms by your sides. Feel the bottoms of your feet planted on the floor. Keep your eyes open.
  2. Imagine you are a mountain rising up from the ocean. Your head is the top of the mountain.
  3. Raise your arms, fingers apart. This lifts your mountain higher. Hold this position for a moment, solid as a mountain.
  4. Notice if you have any thoughts or worries. See them as tiny waves splashing the mountain.
  5. Breathe in and notice the worry, then breathe out to blow the worry wave far out to sea. Repeat as needed. Watch the water become calm and still around you.

Connecting to Our Faith

Thank you, Father, I have faith in you to help me calm the waves of worry. Help me like Jesus did in the Bible when the disciples were in a storm. – Matthew 8: 23-27, Mark 4: 35-41, Luke 8:22-25
